Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a rare chronic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology characterized by fibrosis & vascular abnormality in the skin, joints, lower GIT, esophagus, lungs, heart & kidneys. Symptoms include Raynaud phenomenon, polyarthralgia, dysphagia, heartburn, tightening of skin & eventual contractures. Approximately 2-50 of 100,000 people suffer from SSc worldwide. The disease occurs mainly in middle adulthood. Women are affected 3 to 4 times more frequently than men. It is rare in children. SSc is of 2 types namely Limited cutaneous SSc & Diffuse cutaneous SSc. The type of antibody present predicts the clinical behaviour of the disease such as - Centromere antibody is associated with Limited cutaneous SSc; Scl-70 antibody is associated with Diffuse cutaneous SSc & Interstitial lung disease; RNA Polymerase III & Fibrillarin antibody is associated with Diffuse cutaneous SSc; Pm-Scl antibody is associated with myositis; Th/To antibody is associated with pulmonary hypertension.
