Vimentin is an intermediate filament protein (57 kDa) present in cells of mesenchymal origin. A number of tumors coexpress vimentin and cytokeratin (eg, thyroid carcinomas, pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands, and some renal carcinomas). Coexpression of desmin and vimentin has also been reported in a number of soft tissue tumors (eg, rhabdomyosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, and alveolar soft tissue sarcomas).
