Autism can be diagnosed at any age, including adulthood. Some people reach adulthood without recognising that lifelong differences in communication, sensory processing, routines or social interaction may relate to autism. A late diagnosis can provide a clearer understanding of these experiences and help identify appropriate support.
Signs That May Be Overlooked in Adulthood
Signs of autism in adults can include differences in social communication, difficulty interpreting social cues, a strong preference for routines, focused interests, repetitive behaviours and sensory sensitivities. These features vary between individuals and may affect relationships, work, education or daily activities. For a broader overview of signs and diagnosis, see NIMH autism information.
Some adults may develop strategies that make autistic traits less visible. Masking or camouflaging can involve adapting behaviour, rehearsing conversations or suppressing natural responses in social situations. Research suggests that camouflaging may be associated with mental health challenges and differences in age at diagnosis, although findings cannot be applied to every autistic person.
Why Autism May Go Undiagnosed for Years?
Autism may be missed when a person has developed coping strategies or has previously been assessed for other concerns. Autism can also overlap with conditions such as ADHD and anxiety, which may make adult assessment more complex.
Research also shows that there is no single agreed age that defines a “late” autism diagnosis. Definitions vary across studies and populations, reflecting differences in clinical and research settings.
How Autism Is Diagnosed in Adults?
An adult autism diagnosis requires a comprehensive clinical assessment rather than an online quiz. A qualified professional may review social communication, sensory experiences, repetitive behaviours, restricted interests, current functioning and developmental history. Family information or childhood records can help when available.
For clinical guidance on assessment and management, see NICE guidance on autism in adults.
What Happens After a Diagnosis?
A diagnosis may help an adult understand longstanding experiences and identify suitable support. Follow-up can address mental health, sensory needs, communication, relationships, work or education, and individual support needs. Research on adults diagnosed in adulthood describes varied experiences, including greater understanding and challenges related to obtaining appropriate support.
If you have ongoing concerns about social communication, sensory needs or daily functioning, consider a professional autism assessment with a qualified specialist.
FAQs
How is autism diagnosed in adults?
A trained professional uses a comprehensive assessment covering current characteristics, developmental history, daily functioning and possible coexisting conditions.

How do I get diagnosed with autism as an adult?
Start by discussing your concerns with a healthcare professional who can refer you to a clinician experienced in adult autism assessment.
Why does it take so long to get an autism diagnosis?
Access to trained professionals, complex presentations, limited developmental information and overlap with other conditions can make assessment challenging.
How can I cope with an adult autism diagnosis?
Learning about autism, discussing your needs with trusted people and seeking appropriate professional or community support can help.

A diagnosis may help explain longstanding experiences and guide decisions about support, accommodations and other individual needs.
